In the past few years we have been facing harsh weather conditions in Africa. For instance, this year in Kenya we have experienced the unbearable hot condition from the beginning of February.
According to Kenya meteorological department , daytime highs in Nairobi are ranging from between 30° and 32° degrees Celsius. This makes it difficult to stay indoors and also outdoors.
Africa is exceeding to warm. We are experiencing high temperatures, where records shows that the temperature is not going down but rising at a higher rate.
The change is having a growing impact in Africa, hitting the most vulnerable hardest and contributing to food insecurity, population displacement and scarcity of water.
Sub-saharan Africa is suffering and in 20 years to come, people will be displaced if we do not take action now.
The rapid urbanization and expansion of cities in especially in Kenya has accelerated the heat wave conditions. Concrete, asphalt, and other heat-absorbing surfaces in urban areas retain heat, leading to elevated temperatures, especially during periods of prolonged sunshine and limited vegetation.
We need to care for mother earth. Plant more trees instead of felling them. Paying attention to urbanisation, industrialisation, putting much resources instead of amplifying our voices on climate shows how inhuman we are.
Effects of warmer temperatures
Agricultural Losses: Heat waves can have detrimental effects on agriculture in Kenya, affecting crop yields, livestock health, and water availability. Prolonged periods of high temperatures and drought conditions can lead to crop failures, reduced pasture quality, and water scarcity, threatening food security and livelihoods for farmers and rural communities.
Water Scarcity: Heat waves exacerbate water scarcity issues in Kenya, as higher temperatures increase evaporation rates and decrease water availability in rivers, lakes, and reservoirs. This can impact access to clean water for drinking, sanitation, and agriculture, leading to conflicts over water resources and exacerbating existing water stress in arid and semi-arid regions.
Impact on Wildlife: Heat waves can also affect wildlife and ecosystems in Kenya, particularly in protected areas such as national parks and reserves.
Increased temperatures and drought conditions can lead to habitat loss, reduced food availability, and stress on wildlife populations, potentially leading to shifts in animal behavior, migration patterns, and increased human-wildlife conflicts.
We have seen devastating floods, an invasion of desert locusts, severe droughts and many other natural disasters. All this has hit the human and economic toll hard.
Africans should reconnect with nature. Open hearts and feel the impacts of climate change. There is need for us to move beyond, our voice is not enough. It’s time we take action or we be erased.
How will we take action? We should start by being responsible, care for the wildlife, hold account the emitters for there is need to care for the environment and it’s Surrounding and with this we will create a safer world.
It is everyone’s duty to take responsibility and action on those destroying our world. It is about our survival.
