The Aga Khan University (AKU) has achieved a significant milestone by being ranked in the top 5% of higher education institutions worldwide for SDG 3: ‘Good Health and Well-Being,’ according to the Times Higher Education (THE) 2024 Impact Rankings. AKU has secured an impressive 55th position out of 1,498 institutions globally.
This recognition highlights AKU’s substantial contributions to research, education, and health services. The University has been particularly acknowledged for its research output, the number of students graduating in health-related fields, and its collaboration with health services.
Key achievements include:
- Extensive Research Output: AKU researchers have published extensively on SDG 3, with over 2,500 publications between 2017 and 2023. The focus on health and well-being is evident in the high attention given to this SDG by the faculty.
- Educational Integration: Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are integrated across AKU’s programs. Optional education modules, such as SDG courses at the Institute for Global Health and Development and the Institute for Educational Development, and the inclusion of SDGs in the postgraduate curriculum at the School of Nursing and Midwifery, reflect the University’s commitment to these goals.
- Support for National Policies: AKU supports national government policies and curriculum development related to SDGs.
In addition to SDG 3, AKU also contributes significantly to SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities).
Dr. Salim Virani, AKU Vice Provost for Research, noted, “The global relevance of AKU scholarship is further demonstrated by the fact that nearly 80 percent of faculty publications in 2022 were aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. AKU’s research capacity is impressive, especially given its relatively young age compared to many institutions and its operation in resource-limited environments.”
The University’s commitment to fostering future leaders is reflected in its academic programs, which encourage creative and critical responses to development challenges. Through its affiliation with the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), AKU works closely with the Aga Khan Health Services to advance the goal of health for all in its regions.
AKU’s ranking in SDG 3 mirrors its position in 2022, underscoring the University’s ongoing commitment to excellence and global recognition in healthcare.
