The Dark Side of Dreams: Con, Assault, and the Illusion of Migration to Canada
Canadian immigration fraud investigation: A recent incident in Kenya has shed light on potential dangers associated with relocation agencies.
A 50-year-old chef (identity withheld for privacy reasons) reported being defrauded and assaulted by the directors of a company offering immigration services to Canada.
The man’s ordeal began in Nyahururu, where he attended a presentation by the company. The directors, touting their supposed 11-year experience in Canadian relocation, presented a convincing offer. The man, seeking a new life abroad, signed up for their services.
According to Usikimye, a reputable human rights organization, the victim, in a determined effort to secure his future, went to the extent of selling a piece of land to afford the Ksh250,000 agency fee. His commitment was seemingly rewarded with a letter confirming a sous chef position at a Canadian hotel.

The man’s aspirations for a better life took a horrifying turn on the alleged departure day. The company directors picked him up at a Malindi bus station. Everything seemed above board until he was offered a drink from a seemingly unopened carton of juice. Shortly after consuming it, he lost consciousness.
He regained consciousness in a disoriented state, experiencing severe pain, and found himself alone in a field known as Uwanja wa Ndege in Malindi. Disturbingly, his pants were missing, and a medical report from Malindi General Hospital confirmed his suspicions – he had been drugged and sexually assaulted.
Potential Pattern and Ongoing Investigation
This incident raises serious concerns about the safety of individuals seeking relocation services. Usikimye’s report coincides with another case involving a separate individual demanding a refund from a Nairobi travel agency. Following these complaints, DCI officers conducted a raid on the agency, seizing computers and documents for further investigation.
A Call for Vigilance and Consumer Protection
The authorities are undoubtedly investigating this case, but it underscores the importance of vigilance for those seeking relocation services. Thorough research into a company’s reputation and legitimacy, including verification of claimed affiliations and client testimonials, is essential.
